Meaning Behind the Words

In preparing for this, I went on the Web & found quotes about listening. & you can do that. You can go to Google, or whatever your search engine is, & type "quotes on listening." I'd like to share with you quotes that I found on listening, & I'd like to discuss them with you, both as a individual that does lots of listening & as a teacher. The first is from Ralph Nichols, who said the following: The most basic of all human needs is the necessity to understand & to be understood, & the best way to understand people is to listen to them. They spend the greater majority of our life speaking & listening to people. & lots of times they find ourselves speaking, trying to convey a message, trying to leave people better than they found them. But this morning I need to speak to you about your ability to listen.

I need to present something for your consideration, reflection, & in case you find it relevant, your implementation; & that is on the idea of listening.

Larry Baker takes that to the next step. Baker says:

Nichols says that in case you need to truly understand someone, listen to them. Listen to them with empathy. Now, I do know that there's occasions when you do not feel like the other person is feeling. Well, in case you don't feel that way, convey visually that you do care & that you are, in effect, attentively listening. Empathetic listening, listening from the position of the other person, is the way to truly understand them. It is as well as a way for you to be understood.

Effective listeners keep in mind that words have no meaning. People have meaning. The task of intending to a term is an internal method. Meanings come from inside of us. & although our experience, knowledge & attitudes differ, they frequently misread each others messages while under the illusion that a common understanding has been achieved.

This is a ideal example of the Law of Translation to make definite that they are sending a message & that the person on the other finish is receiving the message that they are sending. & they can also add in to that "paraphrase."

Keep in mind, all of us like to speak, but there is a time to make definite that we are listening to the other person as well as a time to make definite that our message is being received & understood by the person we are speaking to.

All of this leads to thing. Listening to people is a way to understand them. & to be definite that we are listening, listen with empathy & then every time you can, make definite that your translation is there & that your paraphrase is there. This is a way of ensuring effective communication between you & the other person.
