Setting Up in Business - Ways to Make the Most of Your Commute

Whether you are setting up a brand spanking new venture or have recently launched a brand spanking new business, you might still be working your day job whilst you gain clients & gradually start to make money (hopefully). When you are moonlighting or 'five to nine-ing' as it is becoming increasingly known, it can be difficult to find the time to deal with tasks such as training, catching up on industry news, writing your promotion material or even finding minutes to down tools & switch off. However, if you are still working, chances are you'll be commuting to your day job. This can be time that you can put to lovely use - try these fast tips to make the most of your journey:

Download podcasts onto your iPod or mp3 player, or burn onto CDs for playing on the automobile stereo. There's plenty of webinars & podcasts on a variety of industry specific subjects. In case you sign up for relevant newsletters, these are often lovely sources of information for locating suitable media.

Brain-dump your latest article. For the length of your commute, write whatever comes in to your head. Don't cease to edit or alter anything; write away as if your life depended on it. On your return journey, see what you have got. All right, sometimes it is going to be a load of rubbish but you also might be pleasantly surprised at what you finish up with. In case you cannot carryover a netbook or laptop computer, go old-school & use a laptop & pen. If you are driving, you can try recording yourself dictating material on your smartphone (be cautious that you don't get distracted though).

Alternatively, if on a train, edit & polish a written article - try printing it out & reading it on paper. This also means it is much simpler to spot spelling mistakes.

In case you have a smartphone, you can answer your emails & receive a head start on the day.

Read the latest business book or industry journal. In case you have a Kindle you can download heaps of business-orientated e-books.

Hellish, draining & pricey as it can be, the commute to work does mean a portion of your day spent in enforced idleness. In a little business owner's increasingly busy life, it makes sense to make the most of what tiny 'free' time you have.

Use it for thinking or try & relax! On a commute, you say? Obviously it is simpler if you have got a stool or you are not stuck in awful traffic. But try & get yourself in to a mental state where you can switch off (headphones can be lovely even without music to listen to as they do filter out some extraneous noise). Read a lovely book, a trashy journal or listen to music.
